SMPS Board Member Spotlight | Mindy Cernosek

Mindy Cernosek
Marketing Manager at Landtech, Inc.
SMPS Member since:  2008
Board of Directors Position: President

What does your committee (or position) do?  As President of SMPS Houston, it is my job to steer the ship. To make sure that we are all moving in the same direction. It is also my job to serve our Directors helping them when needed and act as a resource to our Members.

Why did you want to be on the board? I truly believe that getting involved with SMPS changes the value of your membership. I spent the first couple of years as a member just attending events but not really being involved. Once I took the jump, (really I was voluntold by my boss, BEST THING SHE EVER DID FOR ME -#itwillchangeyourlife) it changed everything. I created a network that helped me to grow professionally, learned skills that helped my firm excel, and gained confidence. I have gained so much thru SMPS, and I really wanted to give back to our members. I served as Programs Director in 2015 and serving as President seemed liked the next step. I am having a blast- interacting and getting to know with our members, working with my outstanding Board, and serving our Chapter.

What do you hope to accomplish as director/chair? I hope at the end of my term I can look back on this year and feel like we provided our members with value. My goal is that as a Board we can help equip coordinators with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their job, teach managers how to become a leader in their firm, connect business developers with clients, and help directors and chief marketing officers get a seat at the table.

What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming a board member? Jump in!! I know it can be scary, we are all busy and to think about adding something else to your plate can be overwhelming. But I think serving on the Board allows you to grow in areas that you may not be able to at your Company. I would encourage you to take a current Board Member to coffee/lunch/breakfast/happy hour and have them to tell you about their experience and how you can get plugged in.

Why do you love SMPS? I love the support group you have built in thru SMPS. We all have stressful jobs, and knowing that there is a group of people going thru exactly what I am, that I can call when I have a question on a form, or need to make a connection with a client, is invaluable.
