One2One Mentor/Protégé Spotlight: Cindy Young and Whitney Warlick
MENTOR: Cindy Young | Director of Business Development at Duplantis Design Group
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? Definitely to give back some experiences and knowledge we I gained throughout the many years I have spent in the A/E/C industry.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I think every individual has a unique way of providing service no matter what stage in your career you may be. I am hoping we will both learn new perspectives in all facets of our industry and the way we approach projects and clients.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? We are scheduling meetings once a month and will be checking in several times in between our meetings. We will definitely use the guidelines to tailor our meetings in a way that will best benefit our goals that we would like to accomplish throughout the program.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? Seeing a project through from the original concept all the way to completion. I have lived in Houston for over 40 years and am still amazed at what an incredible city it has become and the brilliant people in our industry that have made it all come to fruition. I am a very proud Houstonian!
PROTÉGÉ: Whitney Warlick | Marketing & Business Development Manager at Shepley Bulfinch
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? I’m somewhat new to the Houston market and have seen over the past year that there is still so much to learn. As I continue to improve my knowledge around Business Development, it is always a great idea to have some external direction and support. I am hoping to fine tune my thought process and actions regarding Business Development and looking forward to working with someone who has years of experience to share.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I truly am excited to learn everything Cindy has to offer. She has a great background and I’m excited for her to share where she’s been and what she’s been through. Genuine conversations seem natural for the both of us, which should make some captivating conversations. I’m also hoping to share my experiences and observations as a young professional and am excited to find opportunities to share unique knowledge I might have as well.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Considering we both have Business Development responsibilities, we think it might work best to schedule a few meetings at a time over the span of a few months. We are pretty flexible for times and days to meet and as for agenda, I think we prefer to not have one set; which will fit great with our personalities.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I enjoy the collaboration and innovative thinking. There are so many uniquely smart individuals I get to work with every day and am truly grateful to continuously improve my knowledge and education. The markets are constantly changing which is always challenging, but in return, keeps us on our toes and trying to stay ahead of the curve.
