Mentor: Christine Perret, CPSM, Senior Marketing Coordinator at LJA Engineering
Length in the industry: 10 years
SMPS Member since: 2015, currently serving on both the Communications Committee and the Gala Committee
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? I was a part of the Mentor Protégé program last year as a protégé, and really enjoyed the experience of learning from another SMPS member outside of my own firm. This year I was eager to pay it forward and give the same experience to someone else.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I think it is so interesting to be able to learn how others perceive the world and tackle the challenges they face each day. Everyone’s experience is different, and I am excited to see a little piece of the world through another’s eyes and learn about how they might handle a situation differently than I would.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? We decided to meet once per month. We do not have a strict agenda, but at the beginning of the year, Taylor had some large goals and topics she wanted to discuss which we are tackling one at a time, breaking it down along the way.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I love the network of people in this industry. I have come to know so many, especially through my involvement with SMPS, some of which have truly become life-long friends.
Protégé: Taylor Spencer, Business Development & Marketing Coordinator at Van De Wiele & Vogler, Inc.
Length in the industry: 6 months
SMPS Member since: January 2017
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? I haven’t been in the industry long. I heard incredible things about SMPS and the mentor program. As soon as I joined SMPS I applied for the program that day. I was looking for some support to grow in my position, conquer my goals, and meet people who are on the same path I am.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I have already learned so much from Christine. She has shared with me her accomplishments and difficulties and is always there to help with whatever I am dealing with. I hope to gain confidence in my position and learn all the tools I need to become more successful in my career.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? I keep a running list for whenever I get ideas or have a question as I am working on marketing projects. We also communicate by email if I ever have any questions.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I enjoy being surrounded by people that are so well educated in what they do. I learn something new from them every day.
