One2One Mentor/Protégé Spotlight: Melanie Meeks and Kirsten Cornell

MENTOR: Melanie Meeks, CPSM, Owner of Meeks Marketing, Inc.

Length in the industry: 15 years

SMPS Member since: 2003; Currently serving as Past President

Why did you apply to the mentorship program?  I have always been so proud of this fantastic SMPS Houston program but had not participated in it directly yet. After serving as President last year, it seemed like a good year to jump in as a Mentor.

What do you hope to learn from each other?   I just recently met Kirsten and I’m really looking forward to getting to know her better. We have already identified a lot we have in common and I know I’m going to really enjoy this partnership!

How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting?  My goal is for Kirsten to get everything out of our meetings that she wants. I hope to be able to encourage and guide her in her current position. She is new to the AEC industry and is excited to be working for such a great firm. She has a bright future and I’m hoping to help share any wisdom and experience I have that could help her.

What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry?  I started my career in this industry 15 years ago and it is what I know and love. It’s a competitive yet friendly industry filled with extremely talented people. I have had the privilege of getting to know so many great people and firms from many different disciplines through my job as a marketing consultant for this industry.

PROTÉGÉ: Kirsten Cornell, Corporate Communications for Walter P Moore

Length in the industry: 4 months

SMPS Member since:  October 2017

Why did you apply to the mentorship program?  I was looking for an opportunity to further educate myself in the A/E/C industry and learn from someone who has already proved successful in the arena.

What do you hope to learn from each other?  I hope to be able to learn more about the specifics of marketing as related to the A/E/C industry and how to draw on my previous experience in order to benefit my team.

How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting?  I would like to meet once a month to discuss both industry specific questions as well as challenges I am experiencing in my position/career. Yes, I believe having some talking points beforehand that we can both consider before meeting would be helpful.

What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry?  What I enjoy about Marketing in general is that you rarely have the same day twice. In A/E/C, you are consistently exposed to different types of projects and people that are actively shaping the environment you live in.
