Board Member Spotlight: Valerie Cesari

Valerie Cesari | Marketing Manager at Clark Condon | Design Awards Committee Chair and Communications Committee Member, SMPS Houston

How has SMPS helped you in your career?  SMPS has organically given me a network, but more so it’s given me the resources necessary to better myself as a professional and pushed me to do things I would have thought were beyond my reach. Through education, the mentor program and committee involvement, I’ve learned a great deal of valuable information and I’ve met some really amazing people who inspire me to do more with my career.

Can you offer a helpful hint for fellow SMPS members?  Take advantage of your membership by attending events, joining a committee and going to conferences. Really, just get involved in any capacity you can, which may mean stepping outside of your comfort zone a bit. There are so many wonderful people in our organization and SMPS hosts some really great programs, all of which have helped me tremendously in my career.

What do you love most about your job?  I love the freedom for creativity and that I have a voice. Nothing is set in stone and we can always build upon what’s in place or start from scratch to end up with a better product or idea. We very much have an entrepreneurial spirit within our firm and outside-the-box thinking is encouraged.

If you were not in this industry, what would be your “dream job”?  I would open up my own boutique featuring stationary, custom planners, invitations, gifts and clothing complete with an in-house gluten free bakery. It would combine my love of creativity and design with my now life-long quest to find decadent GF treats. Shop for pretty things and eat fancy dessert. This is a win-win situation.

What would you do with a year off?  I would complete all the projects I’d like to do at my house like painting, organizing and some remodeling. The second part of the year I would love to travel around the U.S. and abroad. There are so many places I would love to see, but never seem to have the time.

How do you kick-back?  Kick back? What does that mean? Kidding! When I do have some time, I enjoy watching a movie or coloring with my two kids. It’s so chaotic during the week that I try to devote my weekends to my family. I also really enjoy playing with my Silhouette Cameo designing vinyl decals or t-shirts (also read: applying vinyl to everything I can). Creativity is an outlet for me, so I try to incorporate it in some fashion when I have “down time.”

What would we find playing on your iPod, or phone, etc.?  I have a wide range in taste as far as music is concerned. It ranges from alternative and pop to country and contemporary Christian. However, my pop section is rapidly growing as my daughter routinely requests I download her “favorite” songs from the radio. I, all of the sudden, know a lot more One Direction songs.
